New website questionnaire

Get started

Guys, click the Get started link above, take a look at the questions and info, specifically the XHTML bit that I can't really write without bias, and (Eric) the text need not be edited till later as in all likelyhood it will get changed and errors will be reintroduced. I want to know (suggestions please) what else we need to find out before we start a job in future. For instance (Eric) might like to include a question RE. Copy editing services.

In the box below, please describe other components you expect to require if not listed above.

Size of website

You may not be able to answer this exactly but please try to give your best estimate.

Estimated number of pages:

Screen size and layout

The vast majority of computer screens today are over 1000 pixels wide (laptop screens, desktop LCD flat screens, 17"+ screens). There are still a few smaller 800 pixel screens being used but these are diasappearing as people upgrade their computers.

On new screens (1000 pixels and over) a 3 column layout is required to properly cover the page

On old screens (800 pixels) a 2 column layout was required to properly cover the page

If you choose to design for new screens, old screen users will have to scroll right to see the third column. However we strongly recommend you choose to design for new screens.

A question of standards

Most websites you see on the internet are written in a language called HTML. Around 5 years ago the world wide web complience group, introduced a new language called XHTML. XHTML was introduced for several reasons. The advantages of using XHTML rather than HTML are technical. If your site is just pure XHTML 1.0 (not including other markup languages) then you will not yet notice much difference. However as more and more XML tools become available, such as XSLT for tranforming documents, you will start noticing the advantages of using XHTML. XForms for instance will allow you to edit XHTML documents (or any other sort of XML document) in simple controllable ways. Semantic Web applications will be able to take advantage of XHTML documents. If your document is more than XHTML 1.0, for instance including MathML, SMIL, or SVG, then the advantages are immediate: you can't do that sort of thing with HTML

Please select from the box below to let us know which language you would like us to use.

A basic color scheme.

If you have a corporate identity package that specifies acceptable color schemes for websites, advertising or PR use, please mail it to one of the addresses provided on the next page, and tick the box below. You can then skip to the end of the page.

I will mail our color scheme:

If you are not really sure what colors to choose, then we can choose for you based on the type of site you are creating. If you want us to choose colors just tick the box below and skip to the end of the page.

Please choose colors for me:

Tick the box below if you want to pick your own colors. Then read the information below and follow the instructions to choose your colors.

Picking your own colors

When choosing colors for your website please remember that you are designing the site to appeal to the maximum number of visitors. Many studies have been made concerning the impression web site color schemes have on visitors. To maximise your website's appeal, and to make the content easy to read, we strongly recommend you choose colors suitable to your site's content and always use a white background unless you have a very good reason not to.

As an example of one of the many studies done concerning colors we provide the following info. and link.

Color Psychology - The Psychological Effects of Color

While perceptions of color are somewhat subjective, there are some color effects that have universal meaning.

Colors in the red area of the color spectrum are known as warm colors and include red, orange, and yellow. These warm colors evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility.

Colors on the blue side of the spectrum are known as cool colors and include blue, purple, and green. These colors are often described as calm, but can also call to mind feelings of sadness or indifference.

More information on color psychology is available here.

Below we provide a simple tool to try out three colors. We will use the colors you select below, take into consideration the type of site you are attempting to create, and create a draft website template. Matching graphic backgrounds and buttons etc. can be added after you approve the basic color scheme as used in the draft website template. If you don't like the draft website template we produce, you can suggest replacement colors.

Color selector

Assuming normal text will be black on a white background, select three other colors to give us an idea of what you think may look good for the type of site you are creating. Keep in mind that these colors do not have to be your final choice. Mainly they are to give us an idea of what you think may be suitable.

Two colored boxes and the word "TEXT" appear below. Select an option from the drop down box provided and click a color on the chart until colors appear as close as possible to the colors you think are best. When they look okay, scroll down and click the continue button.
